Tech debt reduction plan
Inventory technical debt, weigh impact against cost to prioritize it, and lay out a quarterly paydown plan with metrics that justify the investment.
Prompt
Write a technical debt reduction plan for a five-year-old e-commerce checkout system. Purpose: convince leadership to commit a fixed share of engineering capacity to paying down debt on a schedule. Requirements: summarize how debt is hurting delivery speed and reliability, tabulate and categorize the debt items, assess each one's business impact and cost to fix, prioritize by impact and cost and name the items we'll knowingly leave alone, set a quarterly paydown plan with owners, define metrics with baselines and targets, and explain how we'll keep new debt from piling up.
